Rail Trail.co.nz is owned and operated Pip Thomson and acts as a booking facility run in conjunction with her bike-hire business - Cycle Surgery.
Pip has biked the Rail Trail many times and still gets a kick out of it. She is passionate about the beauty and history of the land and never gets tired talking about it to clients. Pip is a born and bred Middlemarch girl and before the Rail Trail she was an avid horse rider and farmer on her family's Gladbrook Station - a sheep and beef farm which in its hey day encompassed much of the Strath Taieri valley.
Pip's husband Dave, was a representative cyclist for New Zealand and his passion for the Otago Central Rail Trail lies in the biking itself. Dave has played a big part in the design of the new purpose-built bikes Cycle Surgery has on offer for Rail Trailers.
Pip and Dave are a great team. More often than not, Pip is likely to be found at her desk at the Middlemarch Cycle Surgery depot sorting bookings and writing itineraries.
Depending on the time of the day, Dave could be getting clients geared up on their bikes, whizzing about in the shuttle somewhere along the trail, picking up bags and people or, even better, behind the espresso coffee machine where he can whip up a darn good flat white!
And somewhere between the two of them is their son Jules. Born in April 2012, this wee guy is quite a character who loves meeting people and, at this stage, swinging from the ceiling in his Jolly Jumper!
