ORGANISING A TOUR OF THE RAIL TRAIL
HOW? First you contact
us to organise the trip - this is the easy and effective way. You can email or
phone us for a detailed discussion of your needs.
WHEN? Summer, spring or autumn,
even winter. Mostly depends on when you have time. You will find that our summers
can be very hot, especially in the middle of the day. However, summer may also be
unexpectedly cold. Please check the climate section for
details. We do recommend that you pack for a sudden drop in temperature, rain and
wind.
WHERE to start? Whether Clyde
or Middlemarch or
somewhere in between is your choice. We will arrange all the details and make recommendations
when you call us to discuss your plans.
WHY? People cycle the trail for
the sheer pleasure of being outdoors, to see countryside at a leisurely pace, to
enjoy the freedom of cycling with no competition from cars, or trucks, or motorbikes,
along a trail of great scenery and landscapes. Many trail cyclists have not been
on a cycle for 40 years - amazing how a skill returns so quickly. The feeling of
achievement at the end of the tour is truly an endearing personal experience.
We tailor tours for families, groups or
individuals and take all the worrying
details out of organising your trip. Our service is
FREE! We know and liaise with operators along the Trail and your
trip costs no more than if you organised
all the details yourself. Our service includes travel arrangements
to
get to Middlemarch or anywhere along the trail, accommodation, meals, cycles & helmets,
secure vehicle parking, baggage forwarding, and all the other
many details
that arise. We think of everything. Information on trail conditions,
clothing, side tours, sightseeing along the way and really good
quality late model mountain bikes will help you enjoy your Rail
Trail cycling holiday.
All our
bikes are new and customised for the Rail Trail with front suspension,
high rise handle bars and platform pedals. Each bike comes
with helmet, repair kit, spare tube and pump. We offer spacious panniers with a
draw string at the top and
a flap that fully protects your gear from dust and rain.
Some of our customers have tried to fit their backpacks
onto their bikes. This is not a good idea. Backpacks and other travel
bags do not easily provide a stable and even load and invariably
move during the day. We strongly
recommend that you consider using panniers instead.
Accommodation choices range from hotels, motels and
cabins. As the trail was once the centre of transport
and trade, it passes through centre of many of the old townships
of Central Otago.
